Job Description

We are recruiting for a Graduate Quantity Surveyor to work on a permanent basis for an engineering/construction company in the Wigan area.

Starting salary is c£25-28,000 per annum plus holidays, pension etc.

The successful candidate will work closely with engineering, project management, and procurement teams to ensure robust cost control, accurate forecasting, and effective contract administration across a diverse portfolio of projects.

Key Responsibilities for the Graduate Quantity Surveyor:

Commercial & Cost Management

  • Assist in the preparation of cost estimates, feasibility studies, and budget forecasts.
  • Support the development of Bills of Quantities (BoQs) and cost plans.
  • Monitor project costs and track expenditure against approved budgets.
  • Assist in preparing interim valuations and final accounts.
  • Contribute to cost value reconciliation (CVR) reporting.

Procurement & Contract Administration

  • Support subcontractor procurement processes, including tender analysis and evaluation.
  • Assist in drafting and administering contracts (e.g., NEC, JCT, or bespoke engineering contracts).
  • Help manage variations, change control procedures, and compensation events.
  • Maintain accurate commercial records and documentation.

Project Support

  • Liaise with design engineers to ensure cost-effective design solutions.
  • Provide commercial input during design development and value engineering exercises.
  • Attend project meetings and support reporting requirements.
  • Contribute to risk identification and mitigation strategies.

Financial Reporting

  • Assist in preparing monthly commercial reports.
  • Support cash flow forecasting and financial performance analysis.
  • Monitor and report on project profitability.

Candidate Requirements

Essential

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or a related construction/engineering discipline.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other MS Office applications.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational ability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

  • Understanding of NEC or JCT contract forms.
  • Previous placement year or internship within construction or engineering.
  • Knowledge of cost management software.
  • Working towards or interest in achieving RICS chartership (MRICS).
